In addition to the quality submission from David, I submit the following:
13-14 July, 1943:
During the night, General Demosey's British XII Corps opens an offensive against German positions in an effort to penetrate on to the Catania plain.
At the same time, British and American airborne troops are parachuted south of Catania in order to guarantee passage by Allied troops across two important bridges, Ponte dei Malati and Ponte Primasole.
The operation to take the Ponte Primasole began disasterously since the Allied aircraft came under heavy antiaircraft fire by the Germans, and were forced to drop the parachuists a bit off course.
Only 200 of the 1900 men dropped managed to reach and capture the bridge.
I would assume that Hand survived this episode, and that this may well be the cause of his anti-Italian complex.
15 July 1943:
The parachuists at Ponte Primasole held out all day, but finally ran out of ammunition, and had to withdraw.
