I have copied your message and will save it to add to Hand's military experiences after I find out exactly when he was in Italy.One thing I do remember is he once mentioned that during some jumps, soldiers would land in rivers and drown.Guess they got tangled up in their parachutes.
Another researcher suggested that one of the reasons Hand disliked Italy so much was that it was not uncommon for local folks to greet the newly arrived soldiers, feed them, etc., and then "rat" on them to the Germans.
