Mickey:I myself was a tail gunner on the Martin B-26 Marauder, assigned to the 397th BG of the 9th Air Force in the ETO.I flew on 37 combat missions over Germany. At the time that I was in the 9th Air Force the required missions for the heavy bombers such as the B-17 and the B-24 was 25 missions and for the medium bombers such as the A-20, A-26, B-25 and B-26 the required mumber of missions was 50 .Now it was the policy of the U. S. Army Corps to award a flight crewman an Air Medal for each 5 combat missions that he flew. I was awarded the Air Medal 7 times. In reality the actuial Air Medal was awarded only one time and thereafter a bronze oak leaf each five missions and a silver leaf for each 25 mission. On my Air Medal Ribbon I had one silver oak leaf and one bronze leaf.
