Bob, just wanted to let you know I wrote to the addresses you gave me.Also if you go to www.switchboard.com and type in your surname, you get all those across the country. I did Dowtin and mailed out 30 letters.WIthin the first 4 days a man called me and told me he was a Dowtin. Turns out he is the son of my grandfather's brother. After the 9 brothers and sisters sold the farm from under my grandfather, he never spoke to any of them again. So I feel I have bridged a real gap!! I have found 5 direct 2nd cousins and my mother's 1st cousins we never knew existed! What a thrill this has been. His niece ihas been researching our name also and will be getting in touch. They are also only 7 hours away. So the adventure is only getting more exciting.
So try the above Internet address I mentioned and see what it gives you.I just made a generic letter with a brief background and who I was looking for. I only gave my mailing address and my email address. (But this relative was so anxious to find mne that he called information and got my phone number!). So thank you for the addresses you gave me and leading me to other people finding sites! Sincerely, Carol P.S. Three of the cousins are retired Veterans!!!
