Lost Saroyan lineage

By Tim Mallett November 30, 2008 at 07:22:19

At the request of my mother, I am trying without success, to find the lineage of her father's family.

His name was Melkon Saroyan (no relation to the writer), and his mother had the same name as my mother, Aznive.

During the exodus in the early 1900's (I am unsure of the exact date), my grandfather Melkon (then about 7 years old) his sister of 4, and his mother went to leave on a caravan to Baghdad. His sister was lost before they got out of Yerevan in a crowd (presumed dead), and his dad was either dead or off fighting and then died.On the way to Baghdad, his mother caught ill and died.He was alone and when he got to Cairo (the time lines I'm unsure of) he was informed somehow to goto Lebanon to await his uncle (perhaps parting information from his mother).

Once in Lebanon he sold cigarettes, and sooner or later his uncle came and got him.He took him to Cairo to work as a carpenter apprentice. He was kicked out for playing soccer (or so I was told). After living from hand to mouth for some time he worked for the circus and travelled Europe, he came back to Cairo and finished off his apprenticeship.

By the Time he was 38 he had a pre-arranged marriange with my grandmother Araxy (don't recall her maiden name). And in 1955 the whole family moved to Hamilton Ontario Canada. My grandmother is cousins with the Alexanians, and she has a sister in California, but my grandfater's lineage died with his mother and possibly him.

I am a bit sketchy on specifics but these are the stories I have heard from time to time.If anyone can give me a place to work from please contact my email at mallett457@yahoo.ca please.

Thank for your time.
