I do think that this is probably John's death in 1923:
SMITH, JOHN A D
Parents JOHN D & ANNA
Registered at REDFERN
"DODGE-SMITH - November 19, 1923, at Coast Hospital, John Albert, dearly loved husband of Mary Ann Dodge-Smith, aged 64 years".
"DODGE-SMITH - The Relatives and Friends of Mrs.MARY ANN DODGE-SMITH and FAMILY are invited to attend the Funeral of her late dearly beloved HUSBAND and their FATHER, John Albert, to leave his late residence, Waitangi, 69 Edinburgh-road, Marrickville, TO-MORROW (Wednesday) AFTERNOON, at 2.15 o'clock, for Church of England Cemetery, Rookwood, via Newtown Station".
My reasoning behind this is that John's mother Hannah/Anna appears to have married/taken up with a Thomas SMITH at some stage, possibly when John was still a young boy.Her son, John's brother, Charles Owen DODGE died in 1886:
"THE FRIENDS of Mrs. THOS. SMITH are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral of her late beloved SON, Charles Owen Dodge, to move from her residence, Albert-street, Macdonaldtown, THIS DAY, at 2.30, for the Newtown station".
John's wife Mary Ann died in 1926 and has dropped the "SMITH":
"DODGE - March 7 1926, At Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Mary Ann Dodge, late of 111 Sydenham-road, Marrickville, dearly beloved mother of Charles, Albert, Emma, Mary, Nora, Florrie, Ethel, Rose, and Alma, aged 60 years".
"DODGE - The Relatives and friends of the late Mrs MARY ANN DODGE are kindly invited to attend her funeral to leave her late residence 111 Sydenham-road, Marrickville THIS (Monday) AFTERNOON, At 1 o'clock for Church of England Cemetery, Rookwood".
They are both buried at Rookwood so to confirm that this is the right man I would suggest that you contact the cemetery to see if they are buried together. He may be recorded as either SMITH or DODGE. Unfortunately the online Rookwood indexes have been down for some time now and it looks like they will not be avilable in the near future.
Their daughter Violet Lillian May died in 1920 and was also buried at Rookwood.
