I may be 12 months late, but, I have copious data on Jonathan HARRIS, his son Jonathan and their respective forebears/descendants of which I am one.
Jonathan HARRIS 1828-1894 was my GGrandfather.I am the youngest grandchild of his 12th and youngest child, Mary Ann Amelia nee HARRIS.That puts me very well down in the pecking order!!
Jonathan snr. migrated to Australia from Hythe, Kent through Lidgettown, Natal where he was said to be the Tutor of the Governor's children. Jonathan sailed with his new wife Maria [BLACKWELL] on the barque "KING WILLIAM" from London and Plymouth departing 20 Oct 1849 and arriving in Port Natal on 23 January 1850. He came on to Australia in 1853.
Jonathan snr. established schools in the Tweed Valley and, in fact, named MURWILLUMBAH "home of possums".A few years' ago I assisted in the unveiling of a Plaque in Murwillumbah where he established the first school. His brother John aka Thomas HARRIS was prominent in the establishment of the Fort Street High School [Teachers' College], in Sydney. Headmaster 1860-1862
There has been a book written by Phyllis Bertha PALASSIS about Jonathan HARRIS
Now Melanie, may I ask to which particular line of the HARRIS Family are you a descendant? It will make it easier to extract the relevant data from my 28 000 records.
