Hi Liz I see you have had quite a few responses to your request re Arthur Mcallister already. I'm in Adelaide and do free research for anyone wanting information from the records here. I was in the Mortlock Library a few days ago and found the following:-
Arthur Mcallister aged 23yrs, marital status not recorded, son of John Mcallister married 22/8/1861 to Ann Smith aged 21yrs, single, daughter of Joseph Smith at Chalmers Free Presbyterian Church, Adelaide Dis. Adelaide ref b47 p186
CHILDREN BORN TO ARTHUR McALLISTER 7 ANN nee SMITH.
6. Martha Ann 15/6/62 Bowden Dis. Adel. ref b20 p368 symbol "A" denoting either additional information appears on the birth record, or the registrar has made an amendment to the information on the birth registration.
7. William Washington steward 4/4/78 Brompton Dis. Hindmarsh Dis. Hindmarsh ref b199 p487.
(Brompton and Bowden are ajoining suburbs here in Adelaide. They are quite close to Port Adelaide, which is where the ships arriving from overseas moored)
DEATHS. 1. Ann aged 65yrs of Brompton died 4/10/1905 at Brompton, widow of Arthur McAllister District Hindmarsh ref b312 p413
2. Letitia aged 1 month of Brompton died 4/7/72 at Brompton Dis. Adelaide. daughter of Arthur McAllister ref b48 p246.
3. Arthur McAllister, aged 61yrs, of Brompton died 29/9/1900 at Adelaide. Informant not recorded. District Adelaide. ref b272 p474 symbol "h" denoting this person died in a hospital.
I have made a thorough search of passenger lists of the ships arriving in S.Aus. from overseas looking for information re Arthur McAllister.Unfortunately we do not have a passenger list for every ship which came here. The ship's surgeon was supposed to list the names and hand the list to the South Australian authority when the ship docked here, but many of the passenger lists were just never handed in.
I'm sorry to say there is no arrival record for Arthur McAllister in all of our passenger list records, which are numerous. However, we do have such a thing as Coastal shipping records, and a searched of those showed the following which may, (or may not) be of any help.
A Mr. & Mrs. McAllister and three children (no Christian names given for any of these people) arrived in Adelaide 4th March 1844 from Port Lincoln (in South Australia).
It did occur to me that if Arthur McAllister was born in 1838 he just may have been one of the unnamed children who came to Adelaide in 1844.He would have been then c6yrs of age.
I know this is a bit stretched but I thought I would send just in case it fits somewhere for you.
Our birth records only begin in 1842,so it is highly improbable that Arthur was born in S.Aus.
I'd be happy to look for marriage records of the children of Arthur & Ann Smith if that would be of any help. Please just get back to me on my email address if you would like me to do that when I get back to the library again at the end of this week (hopefully).
