Hi Kellie.I followed all of your leads and I think I have discovered Margaretta Bowden's biological parents:-
John Bowden, b. 1839, England; m. Elizabeth Ann Davey. John Bowden arrived in 1876, on the DUNTRUNE from England, Head - John b. 1839, Occ. Miner; wife Eliz. A. (b c1840); chn: Eliza J. (c1854-); Mary (c1860-); Walter (c1862-); John H. (c1863-); Susan A. (1867-); Mgt (c1872-); Ellen (c1875-). John was a Miner in Moonta Mines, Sth Australia.
The "Mgt" may be (90% certain) my Margaretta! The connection with Moonta Mines is the clincher, as her first two daughters were both born there.
I found an Allingham and Tatchell connection too.If we accept that Susan (Susannah) Arrington/Arringham/Allingham is the Susannah Allingham b. 23 March, 1834, Hamworthy Parish, Dorset, England, of parents James Allingham and Joyce Lanning (Joyce/Joice being James Allingham's fist wife (m.22 May, 1833, in Dorset). James is named in the Marriage Register as 'James Allengame', which is a variant spelling. Joyce Allingham must have died and then in 1838 James married (April-June 1838, in Poole, Dorset, registration district) to Ann Short, born 1805: then the plot thickens.
The shipping records (which rely on second hand reports in the "Register") do not show the Allingham family among the passengers of the BUSSORAH MERCHANT, however the BISA reports that the family arrived in South Australia on Nov. 10, 1848, on the BUSSORAH MERCHANT, listng only James and the children Jane, Jospeh Steven (aged Abt. 3yrs) and James (aged Abt. 2yrs)- no wife, no half sister Susannah. Finding the complete record is a task before me.
Sausannah Allingham married William N. Tatchell 29 Dec 1851, at Willunga.
Her younger, half sister, Jane ALLINGHAME married William JONES (b. 22 Nov 1850, Kapunda, son of William Jones and Elizabeth Pollard.Jane and William's son also named William, married Margaretta Bowden. The couple met when Margaretta was fostered by the Tatchells or worked as a carer for Susannah.
I am now trying to trace William Jones who married Elizabeth Pollard, dau of James and Ann Pollard. He could not have died before 28 Jul 1865 (the d.o.b of his daughter Theresa Maria Jones) and he lived at Kapunda. It appears that William Jones and Elizabeth Pollard may have arrived on the same ship, as several Jones families arrived on the WATERLOO in November 1840, along with Elizabeth Pollard and her parents. Among that lot were several Williams- but which one is the likely lad?.
Could you please look up a death record, for William Jones and Elizabeth Jones nee Pollard who died after 1865, and lived at Kapunda? That may help another clincher. Thanks Wal
