Hi Glen and Jean I saw your query on internet. I am great granddaughter of Joseph Brook and Mary Burns. I am currently researching their story. I have some ‘folklore’ from family stories that I am trying to verify plus some newspaper articles mentioning them. I also have a copy of a formal portrait of the whole family.
I clearly remember Herbert – he came to our family home regularly for meals when I was a child.
I have seen copies of Joseph and Mary’s children baptism certificates but unfortunately the cousin who had them, Joan Williams (nee Brook) died before I could follow up and get them copied. I do know where I can get copies though. I have the marriage certificate (original) of James Joseph Brook and Edith Ellen Cannell (my grandparents).
As I am now semi retired I hope to get to work and find out more about that side of our family. I am certain that Joseph was not a convict. Mary Rowe is recorded as born in Launceston and I am just about to check baptism and birth registers. Another source (newspaper) says she arrived from Scotland with her parents on the “Antipodes” in 1854. I have not been able to trace this ‘online’ with shipping lists but will go to the written sources and see if I can find it there if she is not on baptismal records. I do have the obit. following her death in October 1908.
