The connection between Moorabbin and Somerville has been proven by the family legend told to me by Somerville's LOCAL FOOTY LEGEND,Murray Gomm. He told me that Somerville Henry came to Australia with Tommy Bent, that they were neighbours at Moorabbin and that Bent had the Somerville railway station sited next to Henry's land. All parts are probably true if one accepts that as an embryo or a twinkle in his father's eye, Bent was indeed on the ship; he was born in Penrith,NSW on 7-12-1838. Hannah Neal arrived early enough to conceive and add a fourth child in 1838. The link from Hobart to the Somerville area is virtually proven by www.traceyourfamily.co.uk records regarding Thomas and William Gomm. Thomas, a fisherman, was born about 1840 in Hobart and died on 14-4-1896 at Dromana. William Gomm, a farmer and Methodist, was born in Hobart in 1838, died on 21-12-1915 at Hastings and was buried in an unmarked grave at Tyabb cemetery on 23-12-1915. Somerville Henry, as with most Victorians of the time, would not admit to a convict taint. His claim of coming straight to Victoria and the spelling on Convict Henry's burial record indicate a cover-up.Henry Gomme born 1808 Twyford Berks. christened 9-10-1808 died 6-11-1868 and was buried 9-11-1868 at St Kilda.(C of E sect C grave 300.)Much more genealogy available re Hobart- born siblings.Dromana and Hastings are close to Somerville!
