Thank you for your generous offer to look for the death of Mary Ellen's father William O'Connor (or Connors). Unfortunately I do not know the names of the parents of William O'Connor and have only a rough idea of when he was born - based solely on the age of his wife (Ellen nee Barry) as given on her gravestone in Ireland. From her gravestone, Ellen died in 1852 at age 40, possibly as a result of giving birth to her daughter Mary Ellen, who was born about one month prior to her mother's death. So I assume William would have been about the same age as his wife or perhaps a little older - born therefore about 1810 or so
However, Mary Ellen had at least one sibling that I know of - a brother named David, baptized on 9 Feb 1842 in the Catholic parish of Ballyagran, County Limerick, Ireland (so probably born shortly before that date). It is possible that he also went out to Australia and died there.
I was going to stop there and send this message yesterday, but I decided to look again for this family on ancestry.com. The last time I tried looking for this family was in Dec 2009, when I posted a similar message about Mary Ellen to the O'Connor GenForum and received no replies. Since then, it seems ancestry.com has added some Australian BMD indexes to its website - which I discovered while trying to find some additional information yesterday. However, I could not immediately find Mary Ellen's death because her mother's maiden name is incorrectly listed as Sarry instead of Barry at ancestry.com! It is not possible to correct it, but I did at least attach a comment to that effect, with additional information about Mary Ellen from my research and my contact information.
Using the index information you provided, I also went to the Victoria registry, as you pointed out, and purchased an online uncertified image of Mary Ellen's death certificate. Indeed, the informant does seem to be some hospital official. However, in searching the Victoria death indexes at ancestry.com, I discovered several siblings of Mary Ellen - four brothers, none of whom married! No wonder I received no rely to my O'Connor post! I have built up a good picture of the family through purchasing several online images from the Victoria registry office.
I followed up on these by going back to the newspapers at http://newspapers.nla.gov.auhttp://newspapers.nla.gov.au and found some very interesting stories. Mary Ellen's brother James OConnor died in a bush fire near Kyneton, Victoria, in 1899. The story was picked up by several newspapers. His death certificate shows there was an inquest, which I would love to find. How might I find that? It also mentioned a married sister, so I returned to the ancestry.com databases and found her - Eliza O'Connor married a Thomas Barry! So, we have even more Barrys! Her death record says she was born at Charleville, County Cork. I was able to find her baptismal record in the catholic parish of Charleville (part in Limerick, part in Cork) online at the IFHFwebsite http://corknortheast.rootsireland.iehttp://corknortheast.rootsireland.ie.
So, thanks to your reply, I know a lot more today than I did yesterday! I will make another post here with a summary of my findings.
Thank you again so much. You have been most helpful in advancing my research on this family!
