I am wondering if you have access to some information on a William Deane who was the Governor of Barbados around 1625 til about 1628.He was taken prisoner around 1629 and brought back to England.I cannot find any information other than a write up in a book about the incident.
William Deane is a descendent of my husband. Any information would be appreciated.
I am not sure if you have access to prisoners arriving from Barbados in the year indicated.
Here is an excerpt from the information above:
""When Courteen found out what had happened, he sent Henry Powell to Barbados with 100 new settlers and a supply of arms. Powell landed in February 1629 and formulated his plan.
Realising that he may lose an out and out invasion, he invited Wolverson and his right-hand man, the ex-Governor Deane, on board his ship for a meeting, which they accepted. As soon as they were on board, Powell overpowered them, put them in chains and sailed them back to England as prisoners. Within days, Powell was able to seize control back for Courteen and place his brother, John Powell, as Governor.
