Hi Elizabeth.
Some questions:
What document states that your anestor was born in Bermuda?
Do you have his marriage info?
Was his wife's name: Martha - surname: Stoddard?Have you found any info on her?
Could your ancestor have been in one of the regiments, if so maybe he was sent to Bermuda to help build the dockyards - or as a prisoner!I can put you on to another person if he was in a regiment.
Do you know where his children were born?
Have you checked the census which were done back then?
Did he leave a will - which should show his parents names and possibly his place of birth etc.
Was your ancestor a person of colour or white?
Unfortunately, some of the coloured folk back then are simply baptised "Unknown surname - sally - date"
This is very frustrating for researchers and oh so sad.
Have you checked the www.familysearch.org site - the Mormon Church or have you looked at www.ellisisland.org to see if they travelled to the USA via that entry?
Or are they UK residents? So many questions.
The CARD name in Bermuda (still here) started with Robert Garret Card in 1848 - he married Elizabeth Ann HANS.
If you have any more ideas please ask and I'll do my best to assist you.
Note: birth records were not kept in Bermuda until about 1860.Only baptism, marriage and burial records which are all gathered from the various churches on the island.
The catholic records are not public record and not in book form like the other church records. If you know they were Catholic, you can contact them and they may possibly do a search for you.Good luck, Judy
PS: so if you were born here, lived and then left - there is no record of you unless you were baptized - married - or buried here.
