Hello, I'm new to this forum. I'm posting in response to your message, as you seem to be a bit of an authority on names and their origin.
My great-grandfather, Domenico Foca, whose family had been living in Spadafora, Sicily for at least a few generations, had the name changed from Foca to Fosa, because -- as the story goes -- he didn't want people to know the family was Jewish.
I am wondering whether the family may originally have come from Foca in Bosnia, as there appears to be a stronger connection between Italy and Bosnia/Croatia than I had thought, and that this connection may indeed account for many of those 'blond and blue-eyed' Italiens.
Would you know anything of the history of those names?
