No need to appologize, I just wanted to make sure you knew the Croatian names.
Were you aware of the meaning of USKOVIC?
In fact is was NOT very common at all to mis-spell names on the manifest! This is simply an "old wives tale".Ship manifests were prepared at the Port of Departure by people who were interpretors. The info came from passports carried by the immigrants obtained in their homeland.Once at the port, in Jele's case the port of NY, they would then be taken to the processing center. In the case of the Port of NY, from 1892-1924, the processing center was Ellis Island. The passengers would be ferried from the dock to Ellis Island.
Jele's actual manifest shows the name as USKOVOVIC and the Ancestry transcribers got the spelling right.
Why can you not view the manifest? They are FREE for the viewing at Ellis island org.You do need to sign up but there is no cost for this.I pay for a subscription at Ancestry, where I can download the manifest. So if you like copies emailed to you there will be a small fee.You can email me direct at firstname.lastname@example.org
