RE: JOHNSTONS FROM LIVERPOOL TRADING IN BRAZIL LATE 1800s
There were several firms trading in Pernambuco and Bahia with the name Johnston, but they consisted of one family of Johnstons from Liverpool;Samuel Power Johnston & his son Carruthers Charles Johnston and his son, also Carruthers Charles Johnston.
Some of the firms are SP Johnston & Co, Samuel Johnston and Co, Johnston Pater & Co, Johnston, Comber & Co;some of the firms went into Voluntary Liquidation at the instigation of Carruthers Charles Johnston in 1879/1880.
Caruthers Charles Johnston Senior was born in Bahia, Brazil 1825, and had two sons:- Samuel Logan b 1855 & Charles Carruthers b 1852 - so, if they have any connection with your grandfather, the two sons would be of the right age to father children in the late 1800s.
I am not at present sure exactly what the Johnstons traded in - I think sugar was one commodity - but they certainly traded extensively for nearly a century in Brazil. I am researching Charles Carruthers Johnston Seniorand his daughter Eliza Jessie Johnston as Eliza is my Great Grandmother. If any of this information help, please feel free to reply.
