I am researching the family of Stoyancho (Steve) Voinoff, born 7 September 1886,and his wife, Miloika (Mary) Christoff, born 10 April 1887, both in Divlya, Bulgaria. Steve came and worked in the the U.S. before WWI, and returned to retrieve his family in 1920.They entered the U.S. through Ellis Island, and lived in Sullivan, Indiana, where Steve worked in the coal mines. Two children came with them, Kathryn, or Katerina (b.1910), and Sam (b.1907).Both attended Sullivan High School, where Sam graduated in 1928.
After the family came to the U.S., two daughters were born and died: Margaret (1923-c.1926) and Shirley (1929-1936).Margaret was born and died in Indiana, and Shirley was born and died in Illinois.
My mother believes that a Simon Petrov was in some way connected to the family, either as a family friend, or relation, and perhaps a sponsor for the Voinoff's to come to the U.S.Steve and Mary are my great-grandparents through my grandfather, Sam Voinoff.
I am interested in connecting with anyone who might have knowledge of this family. My understanding is that they left many relations in Bulgaria.I am also interested in learning more about the Popov connection.
