A search for William James’ marriage to Miss Rose in Michigan finds three listings; one of which lists William James, born 1857 in London, Canada.Perhaps if one were to locate the actual registration, if might list/confirm his parents’ names.

The 1871 Census finds a William James (age 14), a son of Joseph James, age 49, a farmer and Elizabeth James (50), living in London, Middlesex East, Ontario.William’s parents and older siblings were all born in England.William was the first child born in Ontario, suggesting the family arrived in Canada between 1854 and 1857.

This William was still living at home with his parents in 1881.

In 1891 Jos. James and his wife Elizabeth (70) and daughter (?) May (7) are the only ones at home.It appears as if Elizabeth died in 1898 (not registered) and Joseph died in 1899.Both are buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, London, Ontario

However there is another William James, born about 1859, also living in London, son of James James (age 53, a tailor, born England) and his wife Bridget (40, born Ireland). His older brother Walter was born in Ontario suggesting his parents may have married in Ontario.

This William was also living at home with his parents (father now John) in 1881.

This Wm. James married Annie Gleeson and was living in London, with young family, his mother-in-law and older brother Walter in 1891.
This suggests that your William James is the first William James discussed.
Chester James had a sister Myrtle. There is a marriage listed for Myrtle A. James, born 1883 in Michigan, married to Albert J. Julian in Alpena in 1899.The 1900 Census confirms her age as 16.

William James appears to have had a younger brother John who also settled (1885) in Green, Alpena, Michigan. His 1894 marriage registration to Maggie Harvey in Alpena lists his parents as Joseph James and Elizabeth Moat.

This agrees with Ancestry hints (1871 Ontario Census) that suggest Joseph James was born in Cambridgeshire, England and married Elizabeth Mote in Welney, Norfolk, England in 1840.Their marriage registration should list their fathers’ names.
There is a William James, age 57, born London, Canada, son of Joseph James and Elizabeth Cole who married Mrs Sarah Anna Thompson (nee Cox) in Alpena, Michigan in 1915.Sarah may have been the mother of William’s son-in-law Albert Julian. This appears to be the right William James, but his mother’s name does not agree with his younger brother’s and his father’s marriage in 1840.

William James may have died in Alpena on August 8, 1922.

His obit may tell you why he is not listed in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 US Census in Alpena and confirm his many siblings, in Michigan and Ontario.
