Hi Douglas,
When French-Canadian names crossed the border into English-speaking areas, they were commonly transcribed by how they sounded.
So, for example, your Bertrand became Barton, Bartraw, etc..
So, keep open the possibility that your Frank Russell was probably Francois (or Francois-Xavier) Roussel.In fact, on the Roussel forum, message 70, you will see that there were other Roussels in Malone, Franklin County.
Then a name like Denio is probably Daniault, or Daniault dit Laprise.
