There is an Ellen Cherry of the right age in the 1861 Canadian Census in Humberstone, Welland County, Canada West (later Ontario). This image is quite light and hard to read, but I believe she (aged 7) and her sister, Alvira(?), aged 10, are living with their mother, Laura, aged 30, a widow, in the home of James & Jemima(?) Stringer, aged 51 and 55 respectively, and also two other children named Stringer -- John and Albert, aged 24 and 16.All born in Upper Canada (later Canada West, later Ontario) with the exception of Jemima who indicates she was born in the US.Laura is likely the daughter of James & Jemima who has returned home with her children upon being widowed.
The 1880 census shows Ellen and Clifford in Platte County, Nebraska, with son, Lewis, aged 7, born in Iowa. With this info, I believe Ellen is in Jackson County, Iowa, in the 1870 US Census, aged 16, born Canada, a domestic servant in the home of John & Helen Burns, both born in New York. I also found a marriage for Ellen Cherry and C.S. Eddy in Jackson County, Iowa, on the 22 August 1872 (familysearch.org).
The 1900 census shows two children, Effie L., born December 1889, and Edna M., born October 1891, both born in Nebraska.
Getting a copy of her death certificate from 1924 may provide the names of her parents.
