Thomas Cumming was born in about 1846 in Monymusk, Aberdeenshire, the son of Thomas Cumming and Janet Anderson.On 30 July 1869 he married Matilda Craig in Daviot, Aberdeenshire.
Matilda was born in about 1849 in Rayne, Aberdeenshire, the daughter of Charles Craig and Jane Souden.
They had 4 known children in Aberdeenshire; Thomas Craig (later Cumming), b. 1868 in Fyvie, Charles Craig Cumming, b. 1871 in Insch, Alexander Cumming, b. 1873 in Peterhead and James John Cumming, b. 1874 in Peterhead.The family was recorded at 15 King Street, Peterhead in the 1881 Scottish census.Thomas was a millwright.
Apparently the family went to Canada in the mid 1880s.While I have not found them in the 1891 Canadian census, they were recorded in Whitewood, Assiniboia, SK in the1901 census.With Thomas and Matilda were 2 of the sons born in Scotland (Thomas and Charles) as well as two children born in Canada (Jessie, b. 21 Aug 1886 and William, b. 3 Nov 1889)
In the 1906 census of the Prairie Provinces, the family (with the same members as in 1901) was again recorded in Whitewood, Assiniboia, SK.
I have not been able to find any of the family in the 1911 census.However, in the 1916 Prairie Province census, I have found 2 possible records relating to this family;
1.Thomas Cumming, single, aged 48 and born in Scotland, was listed as a patient in the RC Hospital in North Battleford, SK
2.Thomas Cumming, widowed, aged 68 and born in Scotland, was listed in the household of Edward and Jessie Wilson in Bow River, Alberta.Thomas was said to be Edward’s father – on the surface this relationship appears to be incorrect and a more logical explanation is that he was Edward’s father in law. (Edward’s wife Jessie is the right age to be the Jessie Cumming listed in the 1901 census).
This interpretation is confirmed by a BC death registration for Jessie Jane Wilson, aged 80, in Chilliwack, BC on 14 December 1966.This registration shows that she was born 21 August 1886 in Whitewood, SK, the daughter of Thomas Cumming and ?? Craig and that she was married to Edward Allen Oscar Wilson.
The only other piece of information I have about this family is a record of the enlistment in Edmonton of the son William Cumming in the CEF in 1915.The attestation papers record that he been born in Whitewood SK on 3 Nov 1889 and his next of kin was Thomas Craig Cumming of Drumkellar, Alberta– presumably this was his older brother.William’s occupation was recorded as carpenter.
I am very keen to hear from anyone who knows more about this family.My connection is that Matilda Craig was a sister of my great grandmother, Mary Craig.
