My sister and I have been doing some research on this Mainman family. They are related to my mother's cousin through marriage. My mother's cousin is Phyllis Dowsett and the Mainman's were related to her husband, Richard Dowsett. We haven't found the first name of Mrs. Mainman but I have just ordered a book called "The Lusitania Story" by Peek Jones and Walsh Johnson, ISBN 1591144736. Apparently it has the full passenger list in it. If it states the lady's first name, I'll let you know (if you don't already have it). We had always heard a story about Cunard paying for support for the three surviving children (the one instance this happened). My sister contacted Cunard Archives a few years ago and they insisted this never happened. A few days later she got a message that we were correct - it did indeed happen. The Archivist wrote the following: "In the list of those missing are the following three second class passengers: John V. Mainman, Mrs. Mainman and Alfred S. Mainman. John Mainman's body was recovered later and he was buried in Queenstown Cemetery on Mary 13, 1915. (The ship sank off the Irish Coast) His resting place is Grave B, 6th row, Upper Tier. His personal effects were handed over to Mr. Ellison of 2 Princess Avenue, Liverpool on the instructions of his executor, Mr. WL Simpson of Exeter. In the list of survivors are Miss Elizabeth Mainman, Master Edwin Mainman and Miss Molly Mainman. Furthermore, in the minutes of a meeting of the Lusitania Refief Fund committee held on December 8, 1915 (refD92/11), one of the cases discussed is that of the Mainman children. A note states that 500 pounds has been put aside for the support of the three children, a girl of 15 and two boys of 7 (which as we know should have stated a girl and boy of 7).You may be interested to know that there were 29 boys and 26 girls in second class, of whom 11 of each survived." I hope some of this helps you. Are you related to this family? My mother's cousin and family live in Australia and, I'm sure, would be very interested to be in contact with you if they aren't already.
