Evelyn Howe was descended paternally from the Haugens (surname changed to Howe in USA & Canada) of Etne, & the Amlands of Tysnes Island, both in Hordaland, Norway, & maternally from the Van Tassels of Sleepy Hollow, New York, from Chief Wyandance of the Montauk Indians of Long Island, NY, & from the Longs of Longfield House, Cashel, Tipperary, & the Moores of Barne Park, Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland (through whom she was descended from the Royal Houses of Plantagenet & Tudor – from Kings Edward III & Henry VII). Evelyn was raised on the Howe Family farm south of Lafleche, Saskatchewan & attended Happy Hill School in Wood River & graduated from Grade 12 at Lafleche High School in 1939 & from Normal School in Regina in 1940. A gifted teacher who loved children, Evelyn’s career spanned more than 40 years. During WWII, after teaching a year in a rural school in Saskatchewan, Evelyn & her sister Mabel headed East in 1942 to work at a war plant in Toronto until 1944, when Evelyn returned to teaching – one year at a school in Ogilvie, Manitoba, and then six years with the Regina Public Schools. In 1951, Evelyn moved to Calgary where she taught (with a few breaks in between) until her retirement in 1984. She completed her B. Ed degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 1958 & in 1959, Evelyn went over to Germany & taught there for two years at the Canadian Forces NATO Base School in Soest. She topped her teaching career with her final posting as Assistant Principal of the Logos Christian School in Calgary. In the late 1990s, Evelyn decided to return to her native province & retired to Regina, to be close to her family. An intelligent, sensitive & beautiful woman, Evelyn, a member of the United Church, was possessed of a warm, vibrant personality & an infectious laughter. She loved music with all her heart & soul & sang & played the piano beautifully & there was nothing she liked better than a family singsong & she even compiled booklets containing the lyrics of the Howe Family’s favourite melodies. Her resonant voice lent itself well to public speaking, both at educational & family functions. With no children of her own, Evelyn’s maternal instincts focused lovingly on her many nieces & nephews & the children of her dearest friends. Evelyn’s life was filled with many joyful and wondrous occasions, such as her parents’ Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1963, the two Howe Family Reunions in 1991 & 2000, & the memorable voyage to Ireland in 1985, when with her sisters Anne & Shirley, she set foot inside Longfield House, her mother’s ancestral mansion in Tipperary & met & visited with cousins there. Throughout the years, Evelyn spent many memorable summer & Christmas vacations with her beloved family in Regina, Gladstone & Lethbridge & down at the Howe Ranch & Poplar Hill Piedmontese Ranch south of Glentworth, SK. During the 1980s & 90s, she enjoyed wintering down in Phoenix, often with friends & members of the family. Despite being a thoroughly modern gal, Evelyn’s love of family was delightfully traditional & old fashioned - her family consisted of her parents, grandparents, siblings, in-laws, aunts & uncles, nieces & nephews & cousins & friends. We, the members of the Martin & Florence Howe Family, will always cherish the memory of our darling Evelyn Matilda. She loved us all so much & we all loved & adored her in return. A Celebration of Evelyn's life will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. in Victoria Avenue Funeral Home, 2080 East Victoria Avenue, Regina, SK with Rev. Marjorie Kent, officiating. Interment to follow in Riverside Memorial Park. www.victoriaavenuefuneral.com
