Thanks, Kathleen! I had read that too. My grandfather was only eleven when he was sent over, after the death of his father; his mother had died a few years earlier. I'm about to get his records from Barnardo's to see if i can figure out why he was sent and not his 13 yr old brother. It seems that there were some shady dealings with the lawyers who executed his father's will and maybe a young step-mother who died shortly after the father.
I was hoping that someone whose family member had also been there might be able to tell me a bit about what went it was like at Barnardo's in Russell. My grandfather never spoke of it. Thanks, Maureen
