I have letters written from William Dunn, 1896, Shelly, Manitoba, Canada, written to his uncle, my great-grandfather William Birks/Burks in Michigan. He says in one letter "I was in Toronto and quite a lot of the towns in Ontario before I came to the North West." I believe Dunn had immigrated from England, and that his mother was probably a Birks from the Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire area, as was William Birks/Burks.
William Dunn married about October 1896. He did not give his wife's maiden name, but did say her first name was Elizabeth and thatshe "is from Ontario near Collingwood." He reported a new baby boy in the last letter.
William was a trackman with the C.P.R. at first, and then in the last letter I have said, "I have took up a government grant of 160 acres of land and I guess we will try our hand farming it now....wheat...is worth 80 cents per bushel this fall with an average yeild of 20 bushels to the acre."
Dunn had a sister Annie who had also come to Canada, worked on a farm and lived in Winnipeg for a time.
If anyone has any connections to or info about the above persons, I would love to hear from you. I am especially interested in discovering the identity of William and Annie's parents and their exact location.
