Hi Don,
The dates you gave has helped to find them. Here is what I was able to come up with.
Ohio, Births and Christenings Index, 1800-1962 about John Harold Bates
Name: John Harold Bates
Gender: Male
Race: White
Birth Place: Bloom, Fairfield, Ohio
Birth Date: 23 Dec 1902
Father's Name: Jesse Bates
Mother's Name: Anna Pearl Swisher
FHL Film Number: 295267
I looked at 1900 census hoping to find Jesse and Anna but looks like they were not yet married. This looks likely for Anna Pearl

I am assuming you have earlier census info on Nina but if not let me know and I will give you what I found.
I am having trouble finding John after his birth record, same for parents Jesse and Ann Pearl.
Here is death for Marguerite

Okay, I just found something interesting. You have John born Dec. 23, 1902 OH which matches with the birth I found with parents Jesse and Anna Pearl, BUT family search.org shows that that John Harold Bates died 3 days later.

This could explain why I could not find him with parents Jesse and Anna Pearl. The John Harold Bates married to Nina must be a different fellow obviously.
I have found a John Harold Bates born May 10, 1893 Boston who shows up in passenger lists going to Montreal and also in WW1 and WW11 draft records, showing his mailing address as 168 Allston St. Allston MA
employer - Worcester-Rockwood Ltd., 1253 McGill College Ave., Montreal.
The WW11 card gives contact as John L. Bates same address in Allston MA
WW1 shows he is single and a student
1921 border crossing he works for Rockwood Sprinkler, 137 McGill St., Montreal. He is a civil engineer, married
permanent address 149 Beach St. Waverly, MA
wife is Mrs. Bates, born Texas, age 22 so not Nina but could this be a first marriage for him ? 1920 census shows her name is Alice. I do not see this Alice after 1920. But then I don't see John in 1930 either. He may have been in Montreal at time of census ?
*** since Nina's death is listed as a death of an American citizen abroad it seems as though they may have only been in Montreal for a visit or perhaps they lived in both Montreal and US which could explain why her death is not listed in the Montreal database.
I have not yet been able to find a connected between John H. Bates born 1893 MA and Nina but as he travelled back and forth to Montreal I suspect this may be the right fellow. I took another look at Nina's death record and see that it has a file number. File 234 so perhaps if you contacted the American Consul office in Montreal they may have more info. It is signed Arvid G. Holm, Consul of the USA and top of the form says Department of State, Foreign Service of the United Stares of America
This really makes it look as though they were not permanent residences of Montreal.
I googled John Bates and Rockwood Sprinkler Company, Montreal and a list of Canadian Fire Sprinkler Hall of Fame inductees came up. He is listed for 1963
Since the latestyear they show in 2011 I suspectyou could also contact them and get more info - maybe his wife's name to confirm if this is Nina's husband.
Also, the Mount Royal Crematorium in Montreal may have more on Nina and John such as where he was from ?? If you knew where he was from it might help to find where they married.
