HOTEL-DIEU HOSPITAL, Québec
The Hôtel-Dieu-de-Québec, the oldest hospital in Canada, founded in 1639 by the Religieuses Hospitalières de la Miséricorde de Jésus, is still in Old Québec City (inside the fortifications). The "Registres des Malades", a manuscript of the people who were hospitalised including names, origin and how long they were in hospital, is really a useful document; it tells you the date of their arrival in New France and aboard which ship. The "Registres des Malades" can be found on microfilm. The Hôtel-Dieu was not only for the poor, as there were no private hospitals in Canada. All the services back then were free, and still are today.
