Robert Logan New Brunswick
It's a bit nebulous but the fragments I have follow. The problem is that Logan was a fairly common name and tracing any one family with accuracy is difficult.
Thomas
ROBERT LOGAN.
A Robert Logan was a Loyalist, arriving in the Smith Company in 1783 with a wife, one child under the age of 10 years, and one over 10 years. In the same company was John Logan, a single man. According to Dr. Esther Clark Wright, both went to Kings Co., NB; John to the Kennebecasis area.
A Nancy Logan was b. ca. 1778, d. or was bur. Westfield Parish 5FEB1829 age 51 years.
James and John Logan petitioned for land in Kings Co., NB in 1812. This may be an Irish, Logan family arriving later.
John and Robert Logan petitioned for land in Kings Co., NB in 1785. This was with many others, including Gorham, Dibblee, Ketchum, Knapp, Lyon, Northrup, Scribner, Wiggins and Whelpley surnames; with an indication that the petitioners were inhabitants of Kingston (town or parish.) These seem to be largely Loyalists. Robert Logan and _____ Clark petitioned together in Kings Co., in 1788. Robert and Jno. Logan participated with other petitioners 20MAR1786 asking for funds or land to maintain a clergyman.
Robert Logan and Walter Logan in 1824 petitioned in Kings Co.
John Logan (250 acres) and Robert Logan (250 acres) received grants of land in Kingston Township, Sunbury Co., NS 14JUN1784. (This would, in 1785, become Kingston, Kingston Parish, Kings Co., NB, and both were re-registered in the new province 10FEB1785) John shared his lot with Jeremiah ‘Stilwill’ (Stillwell?); and likely only had 125 acres of the 250. That John Logan would have half a lot suggests he was unmarried at the time. That Robert and John re-registered at the same time suggests a relationship. The inference is that John was Robert’s son or younger brother.
It is probable that many of this family drifted into Saint John Co., NB; possibly following trades related to ship-building. For example, Nehemiah Logan co-signed marriage bonds for: Joseph Logan and Matilda Stackhouse 1871; and for Emma Logan and John Osborn 1878. William H. Logan co-signed the marriage bond of Nehemiah Logan and Catherine Osborne 1876. Joseph, William H. and Emma were very likely Nehemiah’s siblings, and all were of Saint John Co. The difficulty is that there were more than one Logan families in NB at the time, and distinguishing them can be difficult.
The further difficulty is the lack of early census records in Saint John Co. Also of possible interest is that, if Nehemiah’s sister was the Emma Logan who m. 1878 John Osborne; it appears that Nehemiah’s first wife was Catherine Osborne, possibly John Osborn’s sister. The difficulty is that Nehemiah appears to be Nehemiah Logan. Jr., probable s/o Nehemiah and Eleanor (Bell) Logan. Nehemiah’s daughter, Emma May Logan, was b. 13FEB1873, and would not marry in 1878. This means that the Emma who m. John Osborn is more likely Nehemiah, Sr.’s sister than Nehemiah. Jr.’s. This type of mind-wrenching confusion, caused by the repetition of forenames, permeates any study of the Logan’s. Although, in these cases, we can be relatively sure that these are members of the Logan family in which we are interested; the combination of problems makes the matter painful.
children:
1. ROBERT A. LOGAN b. ca. 1797-8, d. Lands End, Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB 3JUN1878 age 81 years, bur. by the Rev. E. S. Woodman, Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB 5JUN1877 age 80 years.
I realize that the date-of-death and the burial date conflict, but that is what is given. The date-of-death comes from the Saint John, ‘The Daily Telegraph’, 5JUN1878; so 1878 is likely the correct year.
This appears to be Robert Logan, a widower, in Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB in 1851, age 54, b. NB. Also with them was Robert’s daughter, Sarah Buckley, her husband and two children; and three children: Elizabeth (16), Joseph (9) and James (7) ‘Lasky’; probably grandchildren. There is a Laskey-Logan connection that has yet to be defined.
In Westfield Parish, in 1871, Robert (b. ca. 1798), lives with Thomas (b. ca. 1821) and Sarah (b. ca. 1828) Buckley, and their children.
It is possible that Isaac Logan (b. ca. 1827) was also a son. Isaac’s wife in the 1851 census of Westfield Parish was Frances (b. ca. 1825.) Isaac is likely the Isaac Logan who d. or was bur. 15DEC1894 age 67 years, bur. Harding Cem. This Isaac, in Westfield Parish in 1881, is described as Irish, was b. ca. 1827; had a wife, ‘Marjry’ (b. ca. 1842), and children: Isaac (15), ‘Maryan’ (12), ‘Levina’ (10), James (5) and Willard (3.) With them was a Samuel Logan (b. ca. 1856); possibly a son by a first marriage?
In Westfield Parish in 1871, Isaac was age 42, Mary age 30, and children were: Samuel (15), Isaac (5), Mary Ann (2) and Eunice (b. FEB1871.) Very near by (preceding in the census) was Robert Logan (19), Robert’s wife, Mary Ann (22), and their son, Arthur (b. SEP1870.)
2. WILLIAM LOGAN b. ca. 1799, d. Portland, Saint John Parish, NB 10DEC1878 age 79 years, m. 21AUG1823 MARTHA FLEWWELLING (b. ca. 1804, d. Straight Shore, Portland, Saint John Co., NB 13MAR1878 age 74 years), d/o Thomas and Mary Flewwelling.
Their marriage was in, "Kings County Marriage Register, Vol. 1: 1812-1844", entry 149, PANB microfilm F-75. Witnesses were Susan H. Wilmot and Sophia A. Wiggens. The minister was G. L. Wiggins. Part of his marriage register has also been abstracted by Cleadie B. Barnett, (1812-1828), compiled and published privately, Oromocto, NB 30JUN1980. Both the bride and groom were from Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB.

are the following baptisms:
Logan, William / Martha / ... / John / 1825 Mar / ... / ... / Westfield
Logan, William / Martha / ... / Nehemiah / 1827 Oct 5 / ... / ... / Westfield
Logan, William / Martha / ... / William Brazier Harves / 1830 Nov 10 / 1826 Aug 10 / ... / Westfield
Logan, William / Martha / ... / Alexander / 1830 Nov 10 / 1830 Feb 17 / ... / Westfield
Logan, William / Martha / ... / Edward / 1839 May 28 / 1838 ... 17 / ... / ...
William Logan may be the William Logan, Sr. living at Straight Shore and Estey’s Mill, in Portland Parish, Saint John Co., NB in 1865; a fisherman. This also may be William Logan at North Shore, Portland Parish in 1867. Again on Strait Shore Rd., in Portland Parish, a labourer. This seems possible as at least some of his sons, especially Nehemiah Logan, were living in the same area at the same time.
3. CHARLES LOGAN b. ca. 1803, d. Indiantown, Saint John Co., NB DEC1864 age 61 years, m. 31DEC1824 ANN (ANNA/’NANCY’) FLEWWELLING (b. ca. 1804, d. Indiantown, Saint John Co., NB 26MAY1852 age 48 years), d/o Thomas and Mary Flewwelling.
(Kings County Marriage Register, Vol. 1: 1812-1844, entry 164, PANB microfilm F-75. Witnesses were Nehemiah Flewwelling and Robert Logan. Marriage performed by the Rev. G. L. Wiggins.)
Anna’s death notice sates she was survived by a husband and 8 children. Charles’ death notice indicates that he had been a resident of Indiantown since about 1844.
An indication that some of the Eastport, Washington Co., Maine Logan’s might be members of this family is in the family of Andrew Logan b. NB ca. 1846, parents b. NB, a fish dealer in Eastport in 1880. One of his sons was named ‘Lewellyn’; an unusual enough name, and usually in that area of North America, a reflection of the Flewelling family. However, this is likely coincidence as Andrew is given as a s/o Samuel and Abigail Logan in the IGI.
Charles likely m. again as Mrs. Elizabeth Logan, a resident of Straight Shore, Portland Town, Saint John Co., NB d. 31OCT1877 age 59 years (b. ca. 1818.) This could be Elizabeth Logan b. Ireland ca. 1805, Ward 2, Portland Parish; or Logan, Elizabeth (Mrs.) Acadia & Portland Saint John St. John St. John Widow of Charles in the 1871 directory.
4. ISAAC LOGAN m. Kings Co., NB 16DEC1826 RUTHY STONE.
Both were Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB when married, and witnesses were John Stone and Sophia Wiggins.
5. SARAH LOGAN b. ca. 1794?, m. Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB 31JAN1828 JOHN STONE (b. ca. 1806.)
Both were of Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB when married, and witnesses were James ‘-eielly’ and Robert Logan. John (age 45) and Sarah (age 57?) Stone were in Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB in the 1851 census. With them was a John ‘Bunnell’, indicated as a son, b. ca. 1844.
John Stone may be the same b. ca. 1803, d. Saint John Co., NB 27DEC1889 age 86 years. So far, I have been unable to locate him in the 1881 census of Saint John Co., NB. He may also have been the John Stone, labourer, living at Main and Douglas Streets, Portland Twp., Saint John Co., NB in 1865; not listed in 1867 nor in 1871.
6. JOSEPH LOGAN b. ca. 1811, m. Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB by the Rev. G. L. Wiggins 10NOV1830 MARY FLEWWELLING (b. ca. 1816), 3rd d/o Thomas and Mary Flewwelling
Apparently the Joseph (age 40) and Mary (age 25) Logan in Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB in the 1851 census with sons Robert (9) and William (4.)
("Kings County Marriage Register, Vol. 1: 1812-1844", entry 272, PANB microfilm F-75. Witnesses were Elizabeth Wiggins and Margaret Ch[asnut].)
A Joseph and Mary Logan had a son, John (b. 11JAN1836), bpt. at Oak Point 1NOV1836. A Joseph Logan (b. ca. 1811) with his wife, Mary (b. ca. 1816) lived in Westfield Parish during the 1851 census, and had sons: Robert Logan b. ca. 1842 and William Logan b. ca. 1847.
In, "New Brunswick Vital Statistics From Newspapers: 1829-1831", (Vital Statistics Committee, New Brunswick Genealogical Society, Daniel F. Johnson, chair, Fredericton, NB 1984;) in entry # 1039 on p. 56, is an abstract from the 13NOV1830 issue of, "The New Brunswick Courier", which gives:
m. [Westfield] Kings Co. 10th by Rev. G. L. Wiggins
The last two notations indicate that the notice appeared in the, "New Brunswick Royal Gazetteer", and another newspaper. In the case of Mary’s presumed sisters, and the witness to one of those sister’s wedding, it is only assumed that Ann, Martha and Nehemiah are children of Thomas and Mary Flewelling. In this case, having only one Thomas Flewelling from Westfield Parish at the time, the relationship is stated. That Mary has at least two older sisters, and that the other weddings were also performed in Westfield Parish by the Rev. G. L. Wiggins, strongly supports the concept that all were siblings, and that the two elder sisters were Ann and Hannah.
