Michael Fitzsimmons, Sr. (Robert's grandfather) and his wife, Bridget Kent, arrived in PEI from Co. Wexford, Ireland in the Fall of 1835 or, some say, 1840. With Winter coming on, Michael dug a hole in a bank near a river and used a tent for another room and they and their eldest son, Robert (Robert's uncle) stayed there for the winter. Their son, Michael, Jr. (29FEB1844-28MAY1935), married Fairlie Jane McLean (ca. 1855-12SEP1918), daughter of a couple, Duncan and Lucilla McLean. Michael, Jr. and Fiarlie were Robert Cosmos Fitzsimmons parents. Duncan McLean was learned and Scottish, and a member of the PEI legislature in 1842 and 1847. Lucilla was Spanish, probably from the West Indies.
