Hello, My name is Patti Giaimo Reynolds. My great grandfather was Roderick Macdonald from PEI . At age 22 he married Abigail Duval from Montreal (spelling?) age 12, and emigrated to New York.
Roderick had siblings on PEI who also emigrated to the US in the 1890's.I am very unclear about this part of my family history and am trying to find out more.I know Abigail Duval received a diploma from Our Lady of the Angels Academy in Montreal during the late 1800's.Very unusual for a woman at that time.
Roderick and Abigail had 10 children. The first 4 were boys and died at birth or shortly after. Then in order:Agnes, Teresa (Tess), Roderick (unsure I know it was an R name), May Belle, Gertrude and Marcella (my grandmother). They lived at #15 or 19 Pilling Street, Brooklyn, NY.
Roderick fell down the basement stairs there in 1905 and died.Abigail lived until the 1950's on Pilling Street until she was placed in an "old folks home around 1951.She passed away in 1952.I remember her well.4' 11" spitfire!!Roderick was 6' 6" tall. That must have been the epitome of Mutt 'n Jeff!
Of her surviving children, Agnes, Tess and Roddy(nickname) died before I was born.
Agnes and Tess never married.Roddy married and had a son Junior Macdonald.Am not sure if Junior was a nickname or if he was named for his father.Junior married and moved upstate NY.I know for sure there were 2 daughters.Am unsure of any other children.I never met this part of the family.
May Belle died in the '50's of diphtheria.I remember her clearly. She had 1 child, Ronald Stilwell Jr. who married Virginia Rosenberger and had 3 children(Jimmy, Katy and another son) whom I have long since lost track.May Belle was married twice.1st to Ronald Stillwell's father then to Jack Murphy. There were no children from the Murphy union.
Gertrude married Charles Dickens Voels. She passed away in Nov of 1989.There were no children.I knew her all of my life.Because of her and my grandmother I have a "living sense" of history and passed memories from the 1890's onward.
Marcella Charlotte was the baby. She married Frank C Ahlborn in the 1920's.My mother was born June 1924 and my aunt Abigail Nov. 1930.Marcella passed away July 1989.
I know Macdonald is such a common name.....but from PEI??I strongly sense a connection. My family spell it with a small d.I don't know if this is common or Americanized.
The name McInnis is my mother's first cousin's last name.Michael McInnis, one of his parents was a sibling to Roderick from PEI.I don't know the name or whether it was maternal or fraternal.Michael's father's name was Archibald H McInnis.Michael was a Franciscan priest for years. He married my parents and gave me 1st communion. He was also a Naval officer(chaplain), rank of Commander. After Uncle Archie died in 1963 he left the priesthood and married. He moved to Newport Beach, CA where he lives with his wife Doris.
About 9 years ago I bumped onto a Phillip Macdonald at a convention in Glendale, CA.I was bowled over by the resemblance to my great Aunt Gert Macdonald Voels. It sent chills up my spine. If she had a child this man would have been the spitting image of her.It turned out he was a Macdonald who traced his family to PEI as well.
Phillip and his wife Gladys publish a magazine here in Los Angeles. If you are interested I can get the name of the publication. The name escapes me at the moment.
Oh my, this is long....I apologize.I just get so excited when I think I have found a connection!!!
