My grandfather's name was Thomas Cindrick, but family lore is that his names were changed when he came to the USA, and I don't know his original names.I've never been able to find anything about his ancestors until the release of the 1940 census. An enumerator put the names of his parents instead of their birthplaces on the supplementary questions section.Marko was his father and Annie was his mother. On one U.S. census, he was supposedly from Austria and his native language was German. On the 1940 census he was born in Europe and his native language was "Kroation."A newspaper article I have said he was from Slunj, Yugoslavia.Very confusing!
Is Thomas a Croation name, or is there a Croation name that would be Americanized as Thomas? What would be likely spellings of Cindrick if he were, in fact, from Slunj?
Are there web sites that list genealogy information about former Slunj residents? Any suggestions on how I could track his ancestry? Thanks for any help you can give.
