And a large haystack it is! KOVAÈ (correct spelling) is the 14th most common name in Croatia.Kovac = smith (like a blacksmith).
ŠPEHAR (sounds like shay hahrr) is the 258th most common name in Croatia.

However.... Croatians do not have middle names
There are ship manifests for Tomo SPEHAR born c. 1866 from Cerovnik which is in the Kordun region of Croatia.
