I'm fairly new to doing Danish research and am looking for some advice on how to find the gr grandparents of my gr grandfather who came to the US in 1907.
Peder Jorgensen's family has been a bit of a challenge. All I had to start with was his name and the parish where his son (my gr grandfather) Christian Jorgensen was born. Via the 1901/1906 census (with his family in Serritslev parish, Hjorring county) I was able to find Peder Jorgensen's birth date - both listed it as 21 Sep 1840 in Orslev parish.Since there are several Orslev parishes, I went looking in all that I could find - Praesto, Holbaek, Soro (both Flakkejberg and Ringstead) and Odense. The only one where I could find a matching birth record (or even a close one) wasin Orslev, Ringstead, Soro.
Per this record he was the son of Jorgen Pedersen and Marie Hansdatter.I can find this family on the 1834 and 1840 census in Orslev, Ringstead, Soro.Jorgen Pedersen died prior to his son's birth, and his mother remarried to a Daniel Pedersen, who may or may not be related. The family is on the census in Orslev in 1845, 1850, 1855 and 1860, though Peder is only on there through 1855. Marie Hansdatter died in Orslev in 1867.
The problem is that the only records I can find on Jorgen Pedersen give only his age, not an actual birth date, or a birth place. He is age 33 on the 1834 census, 38 on the 1840 census, and listed as age 39 on the death register - he died July 31, 1840 in Orslev parish. Additionally, there is an arrival record for the parish - he was age 30 when he joined the parish in Orslev in 1832.He is also listed as age 30 in the marriage register- 7 Nov 1832.
These ages are pretty consistently showing he was born about 1801 or 1802 - but I don't know for sure where? And even if I just went hunting in surrounding parishes, his name is common enough that I could find any number of Jorgen Pedersens born in 1801/1802.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to find more information on him, or places I could look to find his parents?I've had pretty good luck (and quite a bit of fun) finding parish records on other family members - but I always a clue about what parish to be looking in.
But I'm stuck and not sure how to go forward from here, and I thought maybe someone who was a bit more an expert in Danish research might have some ideas or suggestions on where I could go next.
