Re Piepala as Svante's homestead - I'd say it is likely to be Pispala, a village at the northernmost shore of lake Pyhäjärvi, at present a part of city of Tampere, but at the time referred to here a part of the borough of Pohjois-Pirkkala that was annexed to Tampere in the 1940's - hence Pirkkala. And Epilä, also part of Tampere today, is the neighboring village to the west. It seems Svante never moved around too much.
BTW, Kuru is only some 30 miles north of Tampere. It is presently part of Ylöjärvi, the northwestern neighbor of Tampere. Ruovesi is a further 15 miles north, and Virrat another 40 miles north, all of them along the western shores of lake Näsijärvi.
And yes, I have family over there, and know the place first-hand.
