Vendee archives are online:
However they have limited information online (births/marriages up to 1882, deaths up to 1905, censuses to 1911)
- from this he was born in 1905. This means you would probably have to write to Montaigu if you wanted his birth record.
If you don't speak French you can use dictionaries/form letters to understand the basics.
I can tell you how to see him on some of the censuses:
where it says "Choisir une commune..." pick Montaigu.
Then underneath that the words "Consulter les listes nominatives de cette commune" should appear.
If you click that the right hand should change to a list of links with dates.
Click the one for 1906 and go to page 22. You should see this family (it is normal for women to be listed with their maiden names in some records, and I don't promise I'm 100% on the names):
Souchet, Valentin, 1861, b. Montaigu,
Fillaud, Louise, 1865, b. Montmorillon, Vienne, his wife
Leriget, Aimee, 1886, b. ", his stepdaughter
", Gabrielle, 1888, b. ", "
", Raphael, 1890, b. ", his stepson
Souchet, Raymond, 1905, b. Montaigu, his son
Aubrey, Aimee, 1817, b. Bourg-Archambault, Vienne, his mother in law
In 1911, they are on page 23. There are no additional children; the mother in law and the stepson Raphael Leriget are absent from the household.
- here the births of Francoise Gabrielle (b. 23 Jan 1888) and Louis Marie Edouard Raphael (1 February 1890)
also the marriage of Louis Marie Aime Leriget to Marie Louise Fillaud, 23 July 1886.
The marriage gives him as b. 26 November 1834, Bourg-Archambault, the son of the late Marie Antoine Leriget, who passed away in Lagny (Seine et Marne) 26 November 1870, and of Marguerite Auburn (living).
Marie Louise Fillaud was b. 28 July 1865, living with her parents, Jean Baptiste Fillaud and Anne Giraud.
By this marriage was legitimised a daughter, born on the 2nd July, registered with mother Marie Louise Fillaud and father unknown, called Marie Louise Aimee.
Now for the births of Raymond's step-siblings:
Marie Louise Aimee, 2 July 1886: she was born in the midwife's house (Celestine Gautier), notes in the margin refer to her parents' marriage and her death (23 July 1970, I think Montaigu).
Francoise Gabrielle, 23 Jan 1888: no marginal notes, her father was 53 and her mother 22
Louis Marie Edouard Raphael, 1 Feb 1890: marginal notes show he married in Paris 18e, 12 May 1916, to Juliette Nicole Rosalier.
1 Jan 1898 - Louis Marie Aime Leriget dies. He is survived, if I am reading it right, by his mother and the witnesses include his brother, Joseph, aged 53, and his wife's father, Jean Baptiste Fillaud.
Going back to Marie Louise Fillaud's birth on 28 July, the marginal notes give the date of her second marriage, 28 November 1903 in Montmorillon, to Marie Valentin Auguste Souchet, and her death, in Montaigu, 8 November 1949.
And back to the Vendee archives for Valentin/Marie Valentin Auguste's birth:
7 Feb 1861, son of Francois Casimir Souchet (aged 27), and Rosalie Leonide Marchand (aged 29), witnessed by Pierre Marchand (maternal uncle of the infant).
Interestingly enough, a marginal note says that on 24th November 1902, he married in Nantes to Amelie Aimee Thauby
Sure enough, www.archives.nantes.fr/ records this marriage.
He was the widower of Celestine Augustine Marie Esnard, deceased Montaigu. She was b. 15 April 1854, and was also a widow.
Celestine Augustine Marie Esnard, wife of Valentin, d. 7 August 1891, she was 31 years, 7 months old, b. Saint-Hilaire-de-Loulay, the daughter of Auguste Esnard and Jeanne Loizeau. An infant son died the same day.
He had married her in her home town, 14 May 1888.
There were (according to http://nomsdevendee.fr)http://nomsdevendee.fr), two other children: Alexandrine Souchet, 18/06/1890, and Gabriel, 08/04/1889.
Someone here (you will need to sign up but this site is free) is researching the Souchet family and has info about Valentin:
Father, (Marie) Valentin (Auguste) Souchet, b. 1861 in Montaigu, married at least twice (1888 in Hilaire-de-Loulay, two children before his wife died in 1891 in childbirth, along with a son & 1902 in Nantes, to a widow), before marrying in 1903 to (Marie) Louise Fillaud, herself a widow with three children. Raymond was their only child. His mother, at least, appears to have remained in Montaigu until her death in 1949.
