Yes, that was the easy part. I have a record of him leaving Hamburg in May 1852, on the vessel coincidentally called the Hamburg, arriving at the British port of Hull. It is records of Hermann in Germany that I am struggling to locate. I cannot find a record of his birth or baptism on either Ancestry or on the LDS Family Search websites. I have also failed to find him on a Bremen archives on-line site I found. I am assuming he was from Bremen area as a German woman he married in England in 1860, was born there. On the marriage certificate for this, Hermann gave his father's name as Petor Friedrich Meyer, an architect. Hermann's occupation was mechanic, engineer, machinist.
Am I correct in believing archives in Germany for the 19th century are perhaps not so comprehensive, perhaps many having been destroyed in WW2?
Any help appreciated.
