You may be talking about Old German Script or Suetterlin (sp?) method. There was another form but that looks more like Roman Numeral style. The first one, you can learn by going to the LDS site and clicking on their tutorials. Then if you can learn the lower and upper case alphabet, you will be able to read at least the names, maybe more. The old script was taught until the 1940's in some areas, but even now, many Germans cannot read it. The other option is search for a German school or friend, and see if they will decipher it for you for a fee. Even then, you are at the mercy of the person who wrote it, as some had terrible handwriting. Then too, you will have to look up the words in a English-German dictionary. If you work at it, you will be able to pick out dates, names, places, events, etc.
