I understand that Meyer is an extremely common name in Germany, and in particular in the Hannover area, but I've searched for several years for any possible German connection for my ggggrandfather, Martin Meyer and haven't found anything except various census records which list his birthplace alternately as "Prussia," "Hannover," and, "Bremen."I also understand that he probably left Germany through Bremen.
What I do have is dates. He was born in 1802, and emigrated in either 1827 or 1828, going to Philadelphia, PA., where he married a girl of German/Austrian descent.
In 1852/53 they migrated to Lycoming County, PA., where they and many of their descendants have remained. From the census records it appears that Martin did quite well for himself.
They then proceded to have a large family and lots of descendants, of which I am one.
I've been told all my life that we have a Jewish heritage, but I've not found anything to substantiate that so far.Everything I've found indicates Protestant Christians, with a few Catholic girls married into the family who raised their children in the Lutheran or Presbyterian or Methodist churches.
Any help anyone can give me, either with regard to Martin's birthplace or how to continue the search, would be greatly appreciated.
