My ancestor was William Henry Schmidt (aka Henry Smith), b. 1835 Hannover, Germany, married 1858, Clara Straub (b. 1841 in Augusta, GA, daughter of Peter and Margaret Selena Straub) in Augusta, Georgia.
Henry Schmidt enlisted in Confederate Army, DeKalb Rifles (later Co. B. 1st Georgia Sharpshooters). After the war he and his wife remained in Augusta until 1869, then moved to Savannah, Georgia until 1877.
Henry and Clara Schmidt/Smith moved to Macon, Bibb Co,Georgia 1877 and lived there until 1887, then moved back to Savannah.Henry left his family in Savannah in 1889 for Abbeville, South Carolina, corresponded with his wife for a few months, then was never heard from again.Search of records in Abbeville yielded zilch!
I need names of Henry's parents.Did he have relativies in Augusta? How is he related to other German families, including Schmidts, in Macon?
Family tradition says Henry came to America from Germany by himself and he left Germany to escape conscription in Army. Therefore, he must have left ca. 1851 - 1856.
He was a tailor all his life. After he was wounded during the Civil War, he served in the CSA quartermaster corp in their clothing factory in Augusta, Georgia and after the war continued to work at this profession until he disappeared.
