I've recently discovered that my great-grandfather emigrated from Prussia and changed our family name upon arrival in the States. He took the name Cochran or Cochrane (a Scottish name), which is my family name today. Until last week, I thought it had ALWAYS been my family name.
I'm hoping to pin down my great-grandfather's (and my) original family name, which a family story says may have been "Kochur."His first name was August.
I'm striking out searching passenger lists for "August Kochur."Does the name Kochur ring a bell with anyone out there? Is it even a Prussian name?A quick Google search seems to indicate it's Ukrainian or Russian.
If anyone has any ideas for variant spellings, that would definitely help in my search.
Thanks for the help!
P.S. My great-grandfather was supposedly born in Posen, which I've been told was then part of Germany ... but now is spelled Poznan and part of Poland.
