Answer to Note #780 C.H.A. October 25, 1905.Wyman is in error in stating that Abrahma (1) Ireland married Abigail Greenland, daughter of John.Abraham (1) Ireland died Jan 24, 1753 in his eighty-first year, which would make his date of birth 1672 or 1673, "in a distant land," to quote the Cambridge epitaph. Now John Greenland's will is dated May 1, 1685 and mentions daughter Abigail Ireland. Is it reasonable to believe her husband was at most thirteen years of age?The records of the First Church of Cambridge, recently published by Mr. Sharples in the Genealogical Quarterly furnish complete data regarding Abraham Ireland as follows:
Abraham Ireland and Abigail Durrant were married Aug 9, 1697 by Rev. William Brattle.their children were baptized as follows:
Margaret - Dec 29, 1700 she died Jan 17, 1721 aged twenty-one.
Abigail b Feb 14, 1702-3, married Jan 17, 1722, Ebenezer Shedd.
John, b May 27 1705, married March 30, 1727, Sarah Shepherd.
Mary b Feb 8, 1707-8, married Aug 18, 1725 to Thomas Hutchinson.
Elizabeth b July 23, 1710, married Feb 4, 1729-30 to Ehraim Osborn
Abraham Jr b April 26, 1713, married April 8, 1736 to Anne Bird
Thomas b Sept 25, 1715, married June 4 1741 to Mary Randolph
Shadrach b Jan 16, 1718 married May 31, 1739 to Martha Mallett (see hitory of Harvard for account on him)
Jonathan b October 11, 1719 married Martha ?,
Margaret and Thamazen (twins) b Jan 6, 1743, Margaret married April 13, 1743 to Thomas Raymond and "Thamazen" married Sept 25, 1746 to Nathan Ward.
Now for "Durant," see Hazen's "Billerca."John Durant married Nov 16, 1670 Susan Dutton daughter of Thomas and had: John July 31, 1672; Thomas Jan 7, 1674-5; Abigail Sept 24, 1681 (who married Aug 9, 1697 Abraham Ireland) Mehitable April 20, 1687 (who married Dec 16, 1708 at Charlestown, Thomas Skinner - see Malden Records).
John Durrant, senior, died in prison at Cambridge, Oct 27, 1692 the date suggests that the charge against him was witchcraft.Hence Abraham Ireland's mother in law warned at Skinners in 1721, was no other than Susan (Dutton) Durrant widow of John.I do not get the date of her death nor that of her daughter, Abigail Durrant Ireland.Mehitable Durrant Skinner, widow of Thomas died April 21, 1777 (aged eighty-eight according to Cambridge gravestone, but ninety to a day if the Billerica birth ia correct), and is buried in the same cemetery as the Irelands.Susan Dutton was born in Reading in 1753-54, daughter of Thomas and Susannah. Her father came from Woburn to Billerica in 1669.I do not get the date of her death.
The Malden record of deaths gave me the clue for finding the husband of Abigail Greenland, John's daughter, viz: Abigail Ireland, wife of William, died Nov 21, 1715, aged seventy-four; this would make her birth 1641, and hence the eldest child of John Greenland.William Ireland senior, of Dorchester, 1648, freeman, May 22, 1659 had children, baptized: Rebecca, Jan 10, 1649; Rebecca Aug 20, 1650; Ann Dec 13, 1652; William jr., Oct 16, 1655 married Elizabeth Brookings of Boston about 1680 and died before Dec 17, 1791 (see Suffolk Deeds, 20-500, also Essex County Probate for administration of his estate).William Ireland, Senior, was dismissed to the new church in Boston Dec 3, 1680.In partnership with Aaron Way, who in his will calls him "cousin." he bought a farm at Rumney Marsh (now Chelsea), then a part of Boston in 1651. Abigail Greenland was evidently a second wife and not the mother of his children whose name I fail to find.December 17, 1714 William Ireland and Abigail his wife of Rumney Marsh, sell land (see Suffolk Deeds 10-83).
THEREFORE, ABIGAIL GREENLAND WAS THE PARENT TO NO CHILDREN AS SHE WAS BORN IN 1641 AND HIS (WILLIAM'S) CHILDREN WERE BORN BET 1649-1655.SHE MARRIED A WILLIAM IRELAND NOT ABRAHAM IRELAND.THIS ERROR SEEMS TO BE A COMMON ONE.
