It is assumed that the Richard Greenland found emigrating to Jamacia in 1733 is ours.No proof exactly, but he is the only Richard with a record coming from England at the right time.I think he's the only Richard, actually. This Richard was from Shoreditch England.Rusty Greenland of Virginia had made various trips to England in search of information and found that this Richard was an orphan. He signed on with a Mr. Taylor of Jamacia for an indenture of 7 years as a 14 year old in 1733.His indenture would be up in 1740, hence the birthday of Moses is after 1740, which still works as Moses' first child is recorded as born in 1775.Rusty had also found, though did not record his sources, that a Richard of Harford, Maryland was apprenticed as a watchmaker after 1740.No property records exists that I know of for this Richard, so he must have been a tradesmen without property. No will exsits either.
A letter from Keziah Greenland Shanafelts (dau of Moses' eldest child Nathan) states that Richard of England was her grandfathers father. There is also some family histories on the husbands of his daughters that list that the girls were the daughter of Moses who was the son of Richard of Hartford.
In the 1790 Census there is a Richard but this is younger man.He is the assumed son of Flower Greenland Sr, who is the father of Naomi Greenland who marries Joseph Hurford.Quaker church records record the marriage of Hurford and Naomi Greenland and state that she is the daughter of Flower Greenland, deceased. This is a male name, actually a surname of a family that is living close by to the Greenland's in Somerset England. At the marriage of Naomi and Hurfurd the records states all in attendance.A Richard Greenland is listed next to the parents of Hurford, so I would assume that this Richard stood up for her.The other Greenland's listed are at the bottom of the listing after all the Hurford siblings. These would be here siblings or other family. So this Richard listed is either her uncle (our's) or her brother (the one listed in the 1790 census-and other records).
Note that Keziah letter states that Moses had siblings: Naomi; Nancy; and Abner. She stated that Naomi married and died in a fire with her child. Therefore it appears that there are two Naomi's in Harford Maryland at the same time. Many (researchers) have the one who married Joseph Hurford as the sister to Moses, but I don't believe this is so.I feel that they are cousins. The Naomi who marries Joseph Hurford lives to old age, outlives her husband and marries another, lives in Virginia at her death -I do believe.
Flower Greenland Sr must have a son Flower Jr as another Flower shows up in PA.First in Garden City which is where Joseph Hurford's family is from.He then moves on to Lancaster co. and dies in 1815 and does leave a will.He has a child, named Abner another family name. This also strenghtens the possiblity that Flower Greenland Sr and Richard b 1719 are related in some way.
Next I checked the LDS for some family with a similar naming pattern. There is one in Somerset, with a Richard, Flower, Nathaniel. And this is where that stands. We, as far as I know, do not have the family of Moses' father for sure. And yes, many are looking, most much longer than I, for the connection to England.
