I have a several gts grandmother Marie Josephine Villeneuve who was born c1801 in St. Domingo (Haiti). She married Francis Smith, a London merchant, and they emigrated to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in 1826. There other children included Sir Francis Villeneuve Smith (1819-1909). According to the Australian Dictionary of Biography, "He acknowledged his mother's descent from the French admiral Villeneuve by adopting that name in 1884".
In a nineteenth century biography of Sir Francis Villeneuve Smith, the father of his mother (Marie Josephine Villeneuve) is recorded as Jean Villeneuve, but no further details are provided.
I am afraid that is all I know. I should be very interested in any information you have concerning the Villeneuves in Haiti in the late eighteenth century.
