Several Jewish families were present in the parish of Jeremie during the colonial era. Most of these families were originally from Bordeaux and Bayonne and were of Sephardic portuguese or Spanish ancestry.
Among several,were, the D'Almeydas ( or Dalmeyda) habitant of Dame Marie and Ilet a Pierre Joseph. The Dacosta ( or d'Acosta) brothers who were merchants and shopkeepers in Jeremie. Several natural offsprings of the Lopez de Pas family. The Mendez de Franco ( or Mendes-France) were represented in numerous parishes of the Southern Province.
