You write such entertaining snippets. you should really put them in book format. Unfortunately for the genealogy research, it really makes things just that much more confusing. But I am hopeful. At least we now have a real surname and not my theory of Ontong from Ontong Island.
My father's family (obviously Ontongs) were and are farmers in the Free State in South Africa. At least two of them ( a brother and a sister and now a son of the brother). That was during the apartheid years as well, because the land was given to them through some treaty; so the government could not take it. There was a threat of that for a while, but apartheid ended before they could persue the threat. The one farm is called "Altekort" ( a rough translation - a little short, because the family was very short). They built the house with very low doors and when we visited them, we had to bend over to enter. They built a better house since - with normal doors.
