This is the story. I was borrowing CDs at this glitzy video shop at this monstrous mall i Manila (the city is full of these malls you'd imagine that the Filipinos all have disposable income to throw at the stores !) when the computer turned up a Yolanda Ontong.I didn't act on the knowledge (did not even bother to find out the address). That was the first encounter with our surname. Then later on (1999 ?) I was there again and the cimputer turned up yet another Ontong -- the first was Yolanda and the next was an Esmeralda -- so I asked the clerk if I could get the phone number and/or the addresses of both.Turned out they couldn't do that and so here I am five years later with nothing added to my knowledge about Yolanda or Esmeralda.I asked all my relatives if they knew these names and they all came up puzzled.
I had five brothers and a sister.Except for me and our youngest (the sister Tess) all have passed away. The eldest had one son, Pedro Ontong, Jr.My second brother Rudy also had one son, Joel. My third brother Benjamin had four daughters (Cristeta, Maribeth, Maggie and Susie)and no son.The fourth Victor and the fifth Manuel, died single. So my dad being an orphan, we have no other cousins except for the kids of my mom's sister (whose surnames are obviously different from ours).
So there. I stopped at the incident involving the Hadji (Untung). They are obiously the external line going to the Philippines because as I said the story is that they came from Papua and landed at Zamboanga. The rest of those who made the journey from Papua landed in Bohol and promptly altered their surnames from Untung to Ontong.
Maybe we could pick up the thread from someone Chinese on the net.
