We are trying to establish the birthplace of our ancestor William McMurray, born about 1851 in Ireland, but emigrated to Lanarkshire, Scotland.
In 1872 he married Jane Cameron (b. 1853) in Bridgeton, Glasgow. The marriage certificate cites his Irish parents as William McMurray (iron turner) and Jane(t) Stewart. The young William was a stone mason, and lived in Blantyre with his wife Jane (aka Jeannie) Cameron McMurray. They had nine children: William (1872), John (1874), Jessie (1876), Jane (1878), James (1882),Daniel (1884), Charles (1886), Thomas (1888), and Robert (1890).
Robert McMurray, was our grandfather, but we have no knowledge of the rest of his siblings except that they all emigrated from Scotland, either to N. America (I think William went to Winnipeg) or to Australia. Perhaps some of their descendents have done some family history research and can provide information about the Irish origins of great-grandfather William McMurray?
The 1901 Scotland Census gives his birthplace as Lisburn, Ireland, but I suspect that it refers to the PLU of Lisburn, so it could be either co. Antrim or co. Down. Any advice on how to procede with our searching would be much appreciated.
