There are 39.9 million Americans who trace all or some portion of their ancestry back to Ireland. The Gathering promises to feature events based on particular family histories, festivals, sporting events and genealogical tours as well as workshops, lectures and opportunities to “meet your family.”
County Kerry’s Councilor Jim Finucane highlighted the diversity of attractions that the county offered as well as activities. When asked why Kerry was always on the leading edge of Irish tourism, Finucane pointed out that, “We have a hundred thousand beds to fill. We need to reach out to the Irish Diaspora for 2013.” Among Kerry’s The Gathering events will be a celebration at Muckross House in Killarney, Listowel Writer’s Week festival, Killarney Summerfest and the International Rose of Tralee festival.
