My g-g-grandfather John Francis was born in Ireland and emigrated to the US (Indiana) sometime in the 1850's.
I am not sure of where he came from and do not know the names of his parents. One family member has his birthplace as County Cork but I am not sure of this fact.
Does anyone know which counties had the most Francis families? It might give me an idea of where to look.
Given that I know that the common Irish family naming practice (which may or may not have been followed by individual couples) was that the 1st son and 2nd daughter took the name of the paternal grandparents. The order of his children is believed to be William, Margaret, James, John, Katherine, Elizabeth and Mary. This might be mean that William and Katherine are his parents' names but, of course, I can't be sure of this.
He was born between 1830 and 1835.
Also, is Francis a name of Norman origin as I think I've read?
